If 2009 wasn’t a promising year for Tamil film industry, the same situation is persists with the Pongal releases as well. When the other release ‘Naanayam’ is a below average fare, ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ is not upto to the expectation, but its worth watching to see such a effort in a tamil movie.

The first half (92mins) is filled with usual Selvaraghavan factors like – double entendres, profanity and some more elements patently meant for winning the applause of frontbenchers and ‘C’ class audiences. As the tale proceeds towards the second half, it’s a pathetic scenario as Selvaraghavan stumbles and it makes movie a bit slow one.

First things first: we need to appreciate Selvaraghavan for conceptualizing a good tale of fiction. But he should’ve have pulled the names of two dynasties for the sake of attracting audiences (Though he screens a disclaimer that the film is not based on factual history of Chola dynasty, it cannot be entertained).

An archeologist (Prathap Pothan) is lost somewhere in a never-never land where the world believes that it was once a land ruled by Chola Kingdom. Sooner, his daughter (Andrea) an archeologist by profession, a forest officer (Reema Sen) and her team of armed defense groups are set out to unravel the mystery behind his loss.

To make sure that their journey through the untouched lands is comfortable, they hire local coolies lead by Sugumaran (Karthi). Soon the journey begins and it turns to be tougher than the team had actually predicted.

At the point of intermission, adventures literally transcend towards fantasy, thereby unraveling the hidden mysteries of preexisting dynasties of Chola and Pandian.

Let’s start off with analysis on directorial aspects….

Having set in the backdrops of a different genre, Selvaraghavan should’ve have neatly included the quotients that are essential to engross the audiences. But he seems to have made wrong perceptions altogether. As mentioned earlier, the first half is completely comprised with ‘Adult themes’, which is likely to be resent by family audiences and must-to-avoid for kids. Nonetheless in the second half, nothing seems to be termed as ‘perfect picture’ as the story shifts to darker side, where there’s nothing left for enjoyable vistas.

Musical score by G.V. Prakash is brilliant, especially with his background score. Cinematography by Ramji is good piece of artwork while Computer generated graphic works doesn’t engross us.

Verdict: worth watching the first half
Rating: 2/5

As rightly verdicted by this you, this movie is worth only first half. Directors like Selvaraghavan should think twice before making such movies. Because this is a path breaking movie, because this is a high budget movie and many firsts to its credit, success of this movie is very important to tamil cinema industry.

When you have a crop storyline and feel bad sequences in the second half, i could see even young, adolocent, front bench audience too hated the movie in the first day itself.

Everytime our makers hate them when compared with hollywood movies. In hollywood movies with pathetic ends/ torturing sequences/ hero being killed have a feel good end.

But in 1/1000 you are missing the feel and you are being tortured by selva. If at all he wanted to have huge war scenes and to showcase the battle skills of chola dynasty, he could have made alagamperumal the main villan and still could have brought cholas to land with the help of the trio.

I honestly feel instead of a pathbreaking movie, selva put a huge block in tamil cinemas path.

Well,First of all a big applause for Selvaraghavan who took the tamil film to a new level.I would say tamilnadu is not ready for this kind of story for another twenty years. The movie is an amalgamation of fantastic visuals and an audacious imagination. This movie do not augur well for ppl who looks for some punch dialogues and a lead lady trotting a mass hero. This one is for guys who envied hollywood movies and went gaga over their imagination.Selvaraghavan did outdo at most instances, alas technology didnt help him much.Guys,if you cannot comprehend the movie pls leave it there and think the movie is way ahead of your understanding but pls do not spread bad messages about the movie. We are proud of you Selva and I am sure this movie will have a cult following like that of pudhupettai.

O please Sivakumar, you seem to think that Tamil people are still living in the caves like the chola crowd in the movie. The plot is incoherent. You don’t need too much intelligence to comprehend what he is trying to say, and how horribly he fails. The entire 2nd half is laughable.
Honestly, 2nd half should have received more laughs than the 1st.
The portrayal of the Chola king is flaky. He is introduced in the likes of ‘Mayan’ Kings, who demand human sacrifice and exhibit cruelty. Following this, it doesn’t make sense that people are willing to sacrifice their lives for the same king. First of all, there is no record of Tamil kings practicing cruelty on their subjects. I think he researched the wrong dynasty.
And why is the Indian Army (or whoever they are) who go to war with the Cholas with modern weaponry so cruel to the Chola subjects. We know that only 5 members are descendants of the Pandyas, which includes Rema Sen, the commander, and the Minister, so who are these Army fellows. I don’t understand what motivates the Army fellows to go to war with the Cholas. I could go on and on man. I hope others with point out the rest.

that review on ayirathil oruvan is crap. perhaps u have to come out from the real world and not assume that u are making the movie but watch it as a viewer. U might not be able to even do the slightest portion to this movie so don’t analyze like ur some big time director. understand the movie and how it has changed ppls view on it.

    • selvam, Sivagangai says:

Ash, that is the problem with us. We try not to analyse or question anything, we blindly accept things as told. So what if you recreated the Gladiator sequence from the ‘Gladiator’ or the flying arrow sequence from the ‘Red Cliff’. Does it make it a big achievement? It is not even original to begin with. And how is the ‘Gladiator’ sequence relevant to the plot? On the one hand these dirty, ragged Cholan subjects have no food for themselves or have breast milk to feed their babies, and on the other hand they take pleasure in blood sports.
The King and some subjects seem to exhibit magical powers (or something like it) but they can’t save themselves with the same magical powers when they need that to save themselves in the end.
There were some lengthy incomprehensible sequences, like Rema Sen trying to seduce the King. What the hell was that.
Selvaraghavan clearly has a fetish for toilet habits/peeing. In all his movies, they have to show people peeing and not even wash their hands when done. Sick!

i concur with sivakumar..it seems the like the reviewer here has left his brain behind before writing this review! it is such a wonderful piece of film-making! the director’s imagintation at its zenith! maybe you cannot appreciate it (because it is beyond your understanding) but do not go around bad-mouthing about the movie!

  5. Vivek says:

i dont want to comment much about the review..rather about the movie…

Aayirathil Oruvan is one of the best tamil movie ever…i must admit my expectation were higher but there was some surprises for me…especially the story track…using Cholas and Pandiyars to create a fiction piece is genius…i have travelled to vietnam, malaysia, cambodia, indonesia and philippines..you can really see traces of cholas and indian kings left in these places centuries ago…using these traces the director has created an amazing piece of fiction…

another recent movie i saw was the Avatar..after the movie it makes us to believe that there is another world…there is similar effect created by this movie too…it makes us believe that there are cholas still existing…

my verdict Aayirathil oruvan rockssss…score 8/10 because of some flaws..such as movie showed thailand and mentioned it is vietnam…pandiyan smoking a hookah type cigarete which never exisited in chola perod

  6. Afi says:

i don think its that much bad as the reviewer has portrayed…but what makes me appreciate this is that this is something new in Tamil(although its has some scenes resembling Gladiator, 300 and Harrypotter)..but selva shud not have used the cholas and pandiyas name here and thats why people are relating to the real world scenario and comparing with that …it shud be 3.5 rating movie.. but most of the reviewers i have seen are giving very less ..i have a doubt whether there will be Part 2 will be there (bcoz at the end they put “cholan payanam thodarum”) but seeng the box office status i dont think selva will try to do a second part….and i feel karthi doesnt have a big role here its all Reema sen and she has done it well.. :)

  7. prem km says:

what a fantastic movie..i cant think about anything after watching this movie… fantastic performance by reema sen, parthiban and our hero karthik.. i love this movie…hats off to selva raghavan to think like this and execute it perfectly………no…………..most perfectly and brilliantly,,,….G V PRAKASH….what a music performance…all the songs are superb and marvelous. good team work………………HATS OFF TO ALL CREW MEMBERS…
