Chennai, Jan 30 : The self-immolation of Muthukumar (26) here yesterday for the cause of Eelam Tamils in Sri Lanka, has intensified protests across Tamil Nadu, even as students pelted stones at the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission’s office in the city and burnt an effigy of Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, today.

Wearing black badges, hundreds and thousands of people, including law and medical college students, advocates and political party leaders, under the banner Tamil Eelam Protection Committee (TEPC), paid homage to the body of Muthukumar.

The suicide of Muthukumar, hailing from the southern district of Tuticorin, added fuel to the fire, with infuriated students of Salem Law College pelting stones on Lankan Deputy High Commission’s office, burning Mr Rajapaksa’s effigy and that country’s flag. About 36 students were arrested by the police.

Advocates across the state launched indefinite boycott of courts from today, expressing solidarity with Lankan Tamils and the state witnessed various forms of agitations.

Though incidents of boycott of classes by school, law and medical college students poured in, people and Tamil activists in several parts of the state paid homage to a portrait of Muthukumar.

At Muthukumar’s house, where his body was kept, pro-Tamil leaders and LTTE supporters MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, PMK Leader S Ramadoss, VCK President Thol Thirumavalavan and Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P Nedumaran paid homage by placing wreaths.

CPI Leaders D Pandian and R Nallakannu, All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi founder and actor R Saratkumar, Film Director Cheran and inmates of Sri Lankan refugee camps also paid tearful homage.

Mr Vaiko, who reportedly got a call on his mobile from LTTE Political Advisor Nadesan, quoted him as saying ”the people of Eelam salute Muthukumar for laying down his life for the cause of Lankan Tamils.” The LTTE leader also hailed Muthukumar a ”Hero and Martyr”.
